Boy Scouts of America

Brothers Fred Tyson and James Brown of the Durham Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi have been diligently working with a local group of young men in the Boy Scouts of America program. However, this isn’t your typical Boy Scout Troop. These young men are in the midst of creating and establishing a cultural and historical revolution.

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) were developed as an organization available to young men between 11 and 17 years of age. The goals were to develop character, citizenship, and personal fitness. Consequently, Troop 137 participates in all of the community service and social, educational, and leadership building activities that you will find within other Boy Scout Troops. The thing that distinguishes Troop 137 is that they are the ONLY all African American Troop in Durham, NC. In addition to this cultural point, Troop 137 presently has 11 Eagle Scout nominees. This number is extremely impressive when you consider that only 2% of Boy Scouts nationwide are ever elevated to Eagle Scouts. Thus, Brothers Tyson and Brown are to be commended for their efforts and resilience in developing our future.
